Life Upgraded !

Dear Foodies,

A very thoughtful b'day gift from my roomie, D :)
Its been a while since I treated my blog to a new post. The past month has seen major changes in my life and totally forced me to neglect this space. As most of you already know, I am a student and have been on a job hunt the last few months. The hunt came to an end a couple of weeks back sending me up to Cloud 9 :) Yayyyy !!! I am eagerly looking forward to the work life and am equally scared too :) I've never lived by myself, managing everything on my own in a totally strange place with no one around. Graduate school was just like picnic. We were a bunch of strangers who met up before we got to the US and went on to become a very close knit group now. We hardly felt homesick, in-fact we had our parents complaining about it ! When we left home the first time, we were filled with child-like enthusiasm and busy getting to know each other and the new place. The second time we left home after a vacation, we were eager to meet each other to share stories and were also looking forward to the 13hr stop-over at the beach resort in Sri Lanka :)) ( not that we din't see each other when we were in Hyd :D) So its been fun all the way.

This is going to be the real test of courage for me ! It will be really interesting to see myself do things the right way.. inspite of being all alone that is :)) The posts are going to be a spaced out for a few more weeks. Moving yet again and settling down is going to take awhile. Wish me luck guys, I really need it !

A sweet treat for you guys :)
... and now I need help !! I need to furnish the whole apartment now. I need you guys to suggest things I could buy and where I can find them too. Anything and everything starting from the Living room furniture to the Kitchen. Especially the kitchen !!

What gadgets must I buy, the crockery, what utensils will I need.
Do I buy a teflon coated saucepan set or a stainless steel one or a cast iron ??

There are a lot more Q's, but I hope you catch the drift :D so go ahead and add your comments. I am counting on the vast experience that you have out there, so please come forth with your advice and suggestions.

P.S: A huge Thank you to all of you who left comments here inquiring about me. You guys surely nudged me out of my absence. The inertia had set in and you guys did a great job of kicking me out of it :)) >>Hugs<<

What a coincidence! I was thinking of you earlier today and came to check up on you but didn't post a comment. Thought I'd send you an email...

Glad to see that things are going smoothly!

My advice is to go slow on acquiring things. Make a list and classify things as want, need, must-have-urgently. Find a thrift store in the area - they have the nicest crockery and plates. Go to moving/garage sales - you'll be amazed at what you can find there. Most of all, have fun as you slowly add character to your kitchen and make your new apartment, your home.

All my best to you! Hugs!

I would have waited to post had I known an email was on the way Manisha :) Yup, I have to tell myself to go slow ! I am sooo excited right now that I could buy the whole store :))

But I really want to invest on things that are worth the money and not blindly splurge. Thats where all your advice is going to help

CONGRATULATIONS Girl!!! All The Very Best!!
Like everyone said, go slow.. I took my own time in buying kitchen stuff, and am honestly happy in the little I have.. 2-3 things I find very useful ( and small in size, perfect for 1 or 2 people)! I have a Hamilton Beach Blender (Walmart - under $15) a Black and Decker one touch chopper (under $10- Walmart) and a Coffee Grinder to grind chutneys, podis (approx $12 - CVS!!)
Hope this helps....

Thank you Mansi ! I have the blender and coffee grinder in hand, need to look at the chopper, sounds interesting. And I have to learn to cook for 1 person, that is going to be the toughest challenge !

Priya, good luck with your job and move. I know how hard it is to be away from familiar things. Anyways my kitchen tool suggestion would be invest in quality knife and a peeler, get a good santoku knife will make your job much easy.

Have fun girl !!!

Hi Priya!! I'm absolutely thrilled to see your post :) I'm happy things are working out for you. Ok, coming to business, do not buy everything right away! Wait a while, shop around....and search for the best deals. I have acquired a lot of amazing things that way! As for teflon, DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!!! I had a tumor scare last year which required surgery and I threw out my non-stick set right after I came back home from the hospital. I personally prefer stainless steel(and girl, believe me, macy's has gooooood deals on tools of the trade sets...look into it). Ikea also has a complete kitchen starter kit for a VERY reasonable price. You might wanna check that out too. I personally cannot do without a food processor, coffee grinder, mortar-pestle...so these are appliances you might wanna check out too.
I'm getting so excited for you...I remember I had soooo much fun when I was first settling in....filling up the apartment, making it homely...*sigh*, enjoy it for all its worth...cuz you'll also get the OMG-whats-all-this-stuff-cluttering-my-apartment attack in a few years. I got mine last month and cleared away everything I hadn't used for more than three months. The apartment looks MUCH better now, albeit a little empty.....needs a little filling up in my opinion :D
Ok...so now that I have written a comment e-mail sized, I'll take my leave before somebody throws a cast iron pan my way!!
P.S: *HUGS* can't help saying I'm so happy for you again!

Hi Priya. Well done in getting the job. Good luck with the apartment. I agree with Manisha, go easy on buying, I want to buy now, but my kitchen and house is so full of stuff, I just can't justify buying new things! MUch of it I bought in a hurry and don't even like now!

If you are going to be in a fairly big city, you might find Craigslist very useful. We bought some great stuff really cheap that way (coffee table, rocking chair). One of the most used things in my kitchen: a sturdy glass Pyrex bakeware set (different sizes of baking dishes, pie dish, bowls for mixing and storage). It is great for cooking and looks nice for serving in as well, and lasts forever. Buying the set is waaaay cheaper than buying individual pieces. Most of my kitchen stuff tends to come from Bed Bath and Beyond or online (amazon)(I completely avoid Walmart because of the evil way they treat their employees). GOOD LUCK :)

Congrats on your job! Might wanna add a pressure cooker if u dont have one.
I lived for about a year by myself and I loved it. Cooking for one can be challenging but u can cook all the things that u really like.

Congrats to the new graduate and good luck with you new job. Take your time shopping. Garage and yard sales are great and you may find some wonderful wood furnitures. Personally I prefer buying kitchen items and upholstered furniture new. Walmart and ikea have reasonably priced home furnishings and decor items. good luck and have fun shopping. Sales are just around the corner!

Hi Priya,

Glad to see you're doing well and congratulations, very best wishes for your new home and new job! I am sure you will manage everything just wonderfully :)

My only tip for your new kitchen -- you can never have too many potholders, linen kitchen towels, and wooden spoons :)

Look forward to reading about your new ventures when you get the time :)
